FTP ​

FTP lets you upload and download files with a username and password, which is handy when you need to give someone file access without handing out an SSH key. For your own use, SFTP is more secure and needs nothing extra installed.

Install FTP on the server ​

  1. Open the server's Apps menu, go to the Not Installed tab and install the vsftpd application.
  2. During installation, FlashPanel opens ports 20, 21, 990 and the 40000-50000 range (passive mode) in the server firewall. If your VPS provider has its own firewall, open these ports there too.

Create an FTP account ​

FTP accounts are the server's system users:

  1. Open the server's System Users menu.
  2. Create a new user or edit an existing one and turn on Can Access FTP.
  3. Use this user's name and password to log in over FTP.

After logging in, the user only sees their home folder (/home/<username>), which contains that user's websites.

Connect with FileZilla ​

  1. Download and install FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org.
  2. Open File > Site Manager, click New site and give it a name.
  3. In the General tab, fill in:
    • Protocol: FTP - File Transfer Protocol
    • Host: the server IP; Port: 21
    • Encryption: Use explicit FTP over TLS if available
    • Logon Type: Normal
    • User and Password: the system user's name and password, e.g. flashpanel
  4. Click Connect.

TIP

The server uses FTP over TLS (FTPS) with a self-signed certificate. On the first connection, FileZilla asks whether to trust the certificate; check it and click OK to continue.
